How to print on 3D-printed plastic
Raw 3D-printed plastic is the kind of awkward, textured surface that stops most decorating methods cold. Chemical transfer conforms a full-colour image to the layered surface and fuses it in, so makers can finally brand the parts they print.
Step by step
The workflow.
- 1
Choose the topcoat for the plastic
Use Nitro X for ABS, or match the topcoat to the material. For curved or dimpled prints use Marine A Paper and Every X.
- 2
Print and prepare the paper
Print artwork plus white, fuse with a heat-gun, and spray Every X if the surface is curved.
- 3
Activate and conform
Activate the part, lay the paper down and press it into the layer lines and facets so the print follows the texture.
- 4
Cure
Apply the topcoat and cure per the plastic type, then leave 24 hours.
Pro tips
- →A light mist on the application sponge helps press toner into surface irregularities.
- →Smoother prints transfer more crisply; sand very rough layers if you need fine detail.
